Children’s Privacy: France steps up to lead in children’s privacy with global initiative

The French government has announced creation of a Children Online Protection Laboratory with the goal of improving kids’ online safety globally. This continues a key priority of French President Emmanuel Macron, who made online protection of minors a key plank of his re-election campaign. The charter for the Children Online Protection Laboratory states it will explore, promote, develop and evaluate solutions to improve safety in the digital environment, and it will respect the fundamental rights that are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Plans are to bring together leaders from social organizations, governments, and businesses as well as researchers to identify strategies and develop frameworks and best practices to evolve policies that can best support children.
