Consumers in the Netherlands are joining the Data Privacy Foundation and a consumer protection group there, who will sue Facebook over privacy-hostile practices. To date, 185,000 people have registered. The suit is viewed as a potentially important route to work around a perceived bottleneck in GDPR enforcement.
A new LinkedIn breach is reported to have exposed the data of 700M users, more than 92% of LinkedIn’s total users. A sample of 1M that looks to be valid was posted on the dark web. Information obtained includes names, phone numbers, email and geolocation records.
The Data Security Law of the People’s Republic of China (DSL) has been issued and will come into effect September 1. The law governs data activities conducted in China as well as that of organizations from outside that are determined by their activity to harm China’s national security, public interest, or legal interest of its organizations or citizens. A U.S. district court judge has ruled that Google acted to create illegal monopolies in online advertising technology in a way that blocked competition and allowed higher ad prices to be charged. Google will appeal; meantime, the government will decide what to ask the court to do to remedy the monopoly. Google also faces a new U.K. antitrust lawsuit over its dominance of search.
