Mark Zuckerberg had touted a plan to provide researchers data on how people interacted with posts and links on the platform to allow analysis of misinformation on the site. Turns out, Facebook only provided data selectively on half the users that were intended, so researchers had an inaccurate view.
Data collected illicitly from K-12 schools is showing up on the dark web, exposing the data of millions of school children whose parents are largely unaware it’s happening, according to NBC News. The result of increasing numbers of ransomware attacks, the school data has included Social Security numbers, medical data, and family financial data.
The new agency’s mandate would be to address unfair or deceptive data practices and to improve data security and guard against identity theft.

The new target is “early next year.” Reasons for the delay include concerns expressed by U.K. data regulator Information Commissioner’s Office, an ongoing inquiry by the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority, and widespread discontent in the advertising ecosystem.
