The Colorado Privacy Act (CPA) was signed into law, making it the third state to pass a privacy law following California and Virginia. Consumers there can now ask companies not to sell their data. They also have rights to have data deleted, and companies will be required to request consent when they want to collect sensitive data, such as Social Security numbers and drivers’ license numbers.
South Africa’s Personal Protection of Information Act (POPIA) came into effect July 1st. The law provides South African citizens with the right to access, correct and delete their personal data held by businesses. The U.S. Senate has passed a bill that could potentially ban TikTok in the U.S. if its Chinese owner, ByteDance, does not sell its holdings within a year. The bill now goes to the President Biden, who has said he will sign it. Court challenges are likely to follow.
