The Genetic Information Privacy Act (SB 41) has just been signed by California’s governor to give consumers more control over how their DNA will be used. It includes a right to revoke consent and to require companies like Ancestry to destroy biological samples on request. A second new law (AB 825) expands California’s definition of personal data to include genetic data.
The European Union’s Parliament voted for a total ban on biometric surveillance in public spaces to preserve “privacy and human dignity.” They also called for bans on private facial recognition databases used by Clearview AI and others, and on social scoring systems that rate by behavior or personality.
Morning Consult Trust Brand Report results indicate the consumers want privacy protected and respected, with 65% saying they’d stop using a brand that gave away their data – and would not buy from that company ever again. Additionally, more than 41% made clear that unethical behavior and allowing misinformation to be on a platform are also deal breakers for brand trust.
“Ask Meta AI anything” is what you now see instead of the traditional search bar across Meta apps such as Facebook and Instagram. Meta AI will still perform the basic search function but will also answer questions and chat with you. It should hardly be a surprise when a tech company launches a genAI solution these days but this is a bold challenge to Google and Open.ai (it’s also available as a standalone tool at Meta.ai).
