Pokémon Go, more than just a game – it’s AI input now
Niantic, developer of Pokémon Go the uber popular game that since 2016 has sent droves of players outside (gasp!) to catch virtual Pokémon, just announced it plans to use that valuable data. The company spent the last 5 years building a virtual positioning system (VPS) to enable creation of 3D maps utilizing images users collected – currently 10 million images and growing exponentially with ~1 million new scans a week. Late for privacy now, but advice from in-house is ‘don’t take images in private places – or of loved ones,’ if privacy’s a concern.
