Two ICE-protection apps out at Apple

Eyes Up and ICEBlock are apps that were used to check ICE abuses. Both were just removed from Apple’s app store according to their developers, and Apple has not commented.

Italy has raised the bar for AI governance with landmark legislation. The Artificial Intelligence Law enhances the EU’s AI Act and obligates companies to adhere to strict guidelines that prioritize human oversight over AI and requires transparency and accountability for users. Companies that misuse AI can face criminal consequences. The law also limits copyright protection for works without significant human input, mandates providing risk and impact assessments for transparency and to ensure public trust, and establishes a dual-tier consent framework for minors.

Meta Strikes AI Deals with Multiple News Publishers

Meta has announced agreements with USA Today, People Inc., and other news publishers to pay for access to their content and link to their articles in its AI chatbot. It’s a sharp contrast to Perplexity, which the Chicago Tribune and New York Times are separately suing for allegedly scraping content and bypassing paywalls. Despite this deal, Meta apparently still opposes compensating publishers for news links in social media posts.
