Norway seems a bit fed up with Meta’s ad targeting behavior, so its regulator, Datatilsynet, imposed a fine of kr1M ($100,000)/day that will begin early August and run into November, unless the Meta remediates it. The regulator also referred it to European Data Protection Board, which could make the fine permanent and/or widen its territorial scope.
Google lashed out at the Department of Justice’s threat to break up the company, calling the proposals “radical.” Among other things, Google says the proposals would threaten users’ privacy, stifle innovation and break Android and Chrome. Given the appeals process, it will likely be years before we know whether Google will stay in one piece.
