EU Executives Market Effectively While Respecting Privacy: Piwik

Over 80% of 1800 E.U. CEOs and marketing executives surveyed by Piwik are optimistic that they can market effectively while remaining in compliance with privacy laws. Indeed, over 90% believe companies must respect online privacy. Over 80% believe in the importance of laws like GDPR (up slightly on last year’s survey), although only 66% think privacy laws are easy to understand.

EU Targets Meta Over its ‘Pay or Consent’ Advertising Model

Meta is the latest tech giant to feel the sting of the EU’s Digital Marketing Act after a preliminary finding that their “pay or consent” advertising model is a violation. The model requires EU Facebook and Instagram users to pay a subscription fee to receive a service free of personalized ads. A final adverse finding can result in a fine 10% of the digital gatekeeper’s total worldwide turnover.

Disney and OpenAI Reach Licensing Agreement for Sora

Disney has agreed to license more than 200 characters, costumes, and environments (but not voices or talent likenesses) to OpenAI for Sora, its gen AI video platform. This is highly unusual for Disney, which generally sues AI models for copyright infringement; in fact, it sued Google for that a day before announcing the OpenAI deal. Disney will also invest $1 billion in OpenAI, nicely illustrating how very eager they are to join the AI party.
