If you need an example of what happens when AI companies operate without supervision, this News/Media Alliance study shows that generative AI model builders have drawn heavily on copyright-protected materials from news, magazine and digital media publishers without consent or compensation.  The study specifically argues that “fair use” exceptions to copyright protections should not apply.

Global Governments Start to Regulate AI

It’s not a very fair race, but governments everywhere are doing their best to get ahead of developments in Artificial Intelligence.  Just this week, the U.S. Biden Administration issued an executive order covering a range of safety, privacy, civil rights, labor, innovation, and other issues, while the Group of 7 industrial countries endorsed its own 11-point framework on responsible AI creation and deployment.  As with all regulations, the impact depends on enforcement.

Global marketing agency Omnicom announced an $835 million deal for Flywheel Digital, which offers digital commerce products and services for operations, media execution, and market intelligence.  Interestingly, the purchase announcement goes out of its way to promise that Flywheel’s “product and transaction data will be connected to Omni’s audience and behavioral data to provide unmatched insights and analytics.”   Sounds like they care more about the data than the services.

Consumers Eager for Personalized Content: Marigold

It’s all surveys today, Dear Reader.  Marigold reports that consumers are eager for personalized content, with 79% saying they’re likely to engage with a personalized email tailored to their interests.  Sadly, 33% feel their needs are unmet by current brand messages.  Discounts and coupons (95%) top the list of what they want in exchange for personal data, followed closely by loyalty rewards at 94%.  Content is last at 61%.
