According to internal Meta documents seen by Reuters, Meta projected it would earn 10.1% of its 2024 revenue ($16 billion) from scams and other banned ads. While Meta has automated systems that flag fraudulent ads, they require a 95% level of certainty of fraud before banning an advertiser. Meta claims the true number of revenue earned from fraud is lower but declined to provide a better figure.

It’s a sharp contrast to Perplexity, which the Chicago Tribune and New York Times are separately suing for allegedly scraping content and bypassing paywalls. Despite this deal, Meta apparently still opposes compensating publishers for news links in social media posts.
