Android users in California won a class action suit against Google after the company ran up users’ smartphone costs by sending and receiving unwanted data while the devices weren’t in use.
The fine of $314.6 million, which Google plans to appeal, could be followed by a larger one, since Android users in the 49 other states have filed a federal class action.
Meta’s Threads is breathing down the neck of X when it comes to numbers of daily app users, but still lags behind on web users, according to data from Similarweb. Threads now has 115.1 million daily active app users, representing almost 130% YoY growth (X has 132 million daily users). Healthy competition for those ad dollars.
The state attorneys general of California and 19 other states claim the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) violated federal privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) when it released private medical data of enrollees without their consent to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The government wants the data to track immigrant use of the system.
