IAB Sues to Block FTC “Click to Cancel” Rule

Hoping to play a regulation-hostile judiciary, the IAB has filed its first-ever lawsuit, attempting to block the FTC’s “click to cancel” rule making it easier for consumers to cancel subscriptions. The IAB complains about a failure to follow correct procedures, vague language, and threats to “a business model essential to companies of all sizes across various industries.”  Raise your hand if your business depends on trapping unhappy customers.

LinkedIn fined €310M by Irish DPC

LinkedIn has been fined €310 million (~$335 million) by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for being out of compliance with Articles 5 and 6 of GDPR regarding how it processes data for targeted analysis and behavioral processing. The complaint was made by the French Data Protection Authority to the DPC, which has jurisdiction over the company. Concerns include that consent obtained by LinkedIn from third party vendors was not freely given by users to the company.

Covert tracking – no problem for LocationX, a big one for us

Little-known US tech company Babel Street has a shadowy platform, LocationX, which can scarily select an area around any designated location in the world, identify mobile devices coming in and out of that area, and see where they’re going. Think health or abortion clinics, political rallies, religious sites, government offices or police stations and why the ability to follow those who have been there is a privacy nightmare. Atlas Data Privacy Corporation filed a lawsuit against the company for warrantless surveillance.
