Removing a lot of drama from the highly fraught question of identifying gender identity, the EU Court of Justice ruled a person can go by their lived identity rather than being required to submit medical records of proof. What a concept!! This came after Hungary would not allow an Iranian asylum seeker to specify current gender identity as opposed to that at birth.

Ignoring pleas of civil rights advocates, US politicians and media, the UK High Court is conducting its case demanding back-door access to Apple user data in secret. Citing privacy concerns for doing so, the High Court is seeking to gain future access to Apple data when it believes it can benefit UK law enforcement. This violates Apple’s policy of not allowing access to private information.

Watch for the EU Data Act this fall. The EU law governing distribution, sharing and mobility of data that’s collected by networked products and services comes into effect in September. Among its requirements are that users must have direct access to data where feasible, that they can request having data shared with third parties, and that they be allowed to switch between data processors.

Google’s ‘Results about You’ has been redesigned to make it easier to locate and remove data from search results. Users who sign up for the service gain the ability to know when personal data is accessed and are notified about new interactions. The company has also made it easier to request removal of Google Search data

Allstate has been sued by the State of New York over handling of a data breach by the company’s National General unit. National General had back-to-back breaches in 2020 and 2021. in the first case, it did not notify drivers or New York officials about the breach. This was followed by a second bigger breach a year later.

Utah’s App Store Accountability Act, which passed by large margins in the state House and Senate, has been sent to the governor to sign. Passage would make it the first bill in the US to require app distributors, including Google and Apple, to verify user ages and then block minors under 18 from downloading apps without parental consent.  Expect a legal challenge.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of US Department of Health and Human Services just granted Elon Musk’s DOGE team access to the Federal Parent Locator System, a database that tracks children’s support payments. This was done over objections that it would provide DOGE with sensitive information about the income of millions of people.

The video sharing platform, which is used broadly by adults and children, was blamed for inciting violence and bullying, particularly among children.
