IT’S THE LAW (09/30/2025)

New Zealand has an addition to its new Privacy Amendment Act – the Information Privacy Principle 3A (IPP3A). IPP3A specifies that, beyond informing people information is collected, businesses obtaining information from other sources will be required to 1) notify individuals that their data was collected, 2) say why and whether it was authorized, and 3) tell where it’ll be held and how owners can correct it.

EU financials want to block Big Tech from the spending/ saving data it has

Banks, insurers, and other financial institutions in the EU want to keep Big Tech, including Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta, from accessing its data on consumers and their buying patterns. Surprisingly, the financials may get their way. This comes as the Financial Data Access Regulation (FiDA) moves toward finalization, expected later this year with implementation planned for 2027.

OpenAI, parent company of ChatGPT, announced it will add safety features for underage users, including segmenting by inferred age range and disabling the ability to prompt ChatGPT into flirtation mode or engage in conversation about self-harm or suicide. And, while it’s worth questioning why that’s beneficial for adult users, it’s at least a glimmer of responsible action. Meta, meanwhile (and, also responding to pressure) is making its Teen Accounts features available globally to teens on Facebook and Messenger.
