Spanish class action pits media against Meta

More than 80 media outlets in Spain have sued Meta for violating GDPR rules with its consumer ad targeting. The suit, which seeks €551 million ($647 million) in compensation, alleges Meta created unfair competition by using personalized ads without consent.

UK renews call for Apple encrypted data

The UK government is ordering Apple to allow access to private data (at least on users who are British citizens) when the government deems it important for national security. This new attempt to force Apple’s hand comes after a judge said talks on the UK’s previous order (which had proposed the UK have data access on users from anywhere in the world) could not be conducted secretly, Apple, the US government and privacy advocates strongly opposed when the UK wanted this before.

The bill, which faced stiff industry opposition and which Governor Newsom initially declined to sign, is now one of the strongest AI laws in the country. It obligates big AI companies to be transparent about their safety protocols, to protect the rights of whistleblower employees, and to advise the public on risks posed by their technology.
