Supreme Court gives DOGE Social Security data access & a pass on transparency

Hate handing over your Social Security number? Don’t worry! The US Supreme Court just handed over wholesale access to the (formerly, Musk’s) Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) because…well, why not? DOGE asked, which was reason enough.

Plus, in additional recognition of its specialness, they also paused a lower court order requiring DOGE to respond to a lawsuit request for documents. Apparently, unlike other government agencies, DOGE doesn’t need to comply with federal records requests.

Google Must Face Trademark Claims Brought by Publishers

Although a district judge in New York dismissed claims by publishers that the promotion of sites selling pirate copies of textbooks through Google AdSense constituted a breach of copyright, the lawsuit is not over. The judge said that claims that the ads infringed the publishers’ trademarks could proceed to trial. Key to those claims is that the ads featured images of textbook covers including the publishers’ names, such as McGraw Hill and Elsevier.

Android break-in, courtesy Meta & Russia’s Yandex

Researchers at a Madrid science institute discovered Meta and its Russian counterpart Yandex were able to evade privacy protections of Android users by funneling cookies – from websites that contain tracking scripts – to their own apps. This enabled them to analyze web data and make it available to their own apps by bypassing user permissions, incognito mode and working around device IDs.
