Children’s Privacy: The power and harms of Kidfluence

“Child labor” conjures images of kids working in factories or fields – and it goes far back through human history. A new paper, Play Is a Child’s Work, shows today’s tech world has its own ways of using kids for labor – in large part via social media, which has pulled kids in as influencers, whether on a small scale, or as media-savvy kidfluencers with masses of followers. Alarms have been raised about lines blurring between marketing to children, marketing by children, and recently the cultivation of them as super consumers.
