The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed settlement with WW’s Kurbo subsidiary that includes, 1) requiring that WW obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting information, 2) destroying all personal information that was obtained in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) plus getting rid of algorithms and, 3) paying a $1.5 million penalty.
Research by the bipartisan Future of Tech Commission, which is spearheaded by a former US Secretary of Education, a former Massachusetts governor and the head of Common Sense Media, found 76% of Americans support restricting companies from collecting and using personal data beyond what’s needed for effective service.
