Privacy impact more about reputation than about fines, survey finds

A survey of more than 3,000 consumers conducted by customer data platform provider Zeotap serves as a call to action to brands to lead with privacy, or suffer consumer distrust and desertion. Consumers know their data is worth a lot and 62% are prepared to buy from brands who guarantee not to share their personal information. Plus, 58% say they would recommend those brands to friends and family. So, while brands fear fines from regulation, Zeotap says the bigger cost is the loss of consumer loyalty.

TechCrunch report reveals Stalkerware network harvests private data

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is urging the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate a major security flaw found in white label Android spyware apps. These apps, often marketed for use for child-tracking or monitoring employees, have also been used by domestic abusers to spy on ex- or current partners. The security concern was raised by TechCrunch, which reported that this stalkerware network was monitoring 400,000 people around the world.

Japan will enact a major Amendment to its existing privacy law, the Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI). This will also affect foreign business owners, regardless of whether they have a presence in Japan, so long as goods or services are provided to Japanese users. Bipartisan Future of Tech Commission calls for Federal & Children’s Privacy Laws and protection against misinformation

Research by the bipartisan Future of Tech Commission, which is spearheaded by a former US Secretary of Education, a former Massachusetts governor and the head of Common Sense Media, found 76% of Americans support restricting companies from collecting and using personal data beyond what’s needed for effective service. Children’s Privacy: FTC settles with WW; requirements include deletion of algorithms

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has proposed settlement with WW’s Kurbo subsidiary that includes, 1) requiring that WW obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting information, 2) destroying all personal information that was obtained in violation of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) plus getting rid of algorithms and, 3) paying a $1.5 million penalty.
