Accenture Technology Vision 2017: Platforms Are Eating the World (and Your Business)

Since we’re talking tech today, let’s finish with Accenture’s Technology Vision 2017 report. They identify five trends. One is a super-sized version of Button’s app-to-app integrations, which Accenture calls “ecosystems as macrocosms”. Their key point is “platform companies that provide a single point of access to multiple services have completely broken the rules for how companies operate and compete.” In other words, you have to be in the platform ecosystem or you’ll be blocked from reaching your customers. Kind of a big deal. It’s part of the splintering of society into platform-based tribes that I mentioned yesterday and have discussed at more length here. That’s an even bigger deal.

Ponemon Institute Report: Companies Are Ill-Prepared For Mobile and IoT Attacks

Actually, lots could go wrong. And chances are it will: a study from Ponemon Institute found that most organizations are ill-prepared for threats to security from mobile and IoT devices, even though they recognize the dangers. Sixty percent of respondents thought their company had already had a security incident because of an insecure mobile app.  Just 30% said they have budgeted enough to protect against them. They also said that IoT devices are even less secure than mobile apps. Have a great day!

Google Again Delays Third-Party Cookie Deprecation

Procrastinators of the world can throw a party whenever they get around to it: Google has once more pushed back complete third-party cookie deprecation.  The new target is “early next year.” Reasons for the delay include concerns expressed by U.K. data regulator Information Commissioner’s Office, an ongoing inquiry by the U.K. Competition and Markets Authority, and widespread discontent in the advertising ecosystem.
