AI and third-party data risk are top priorities

TrustArc’s 2023 Benchmark survey of more than 2040 global professionals, including executives, managers, full time (non-managerial) employees, and privacy team members outlined 18 challenges and 10 priorities companies big and small are facing when it comes to privacy. Not surprisingly, AI was the top challenge with third-party risk management the top concern.

Children’s Privacy: US FTC sues ed-tech company, Edmodo for violating COPPA

Edmodo has been charged by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) with violating the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the US FTC Act, which regulates unfair acts that affect commerce. The suit alleges children from kindergarten and older were able to use the platform without parental consent. It’s estimated that Edmodo, which shut down last year, had collected data from more than 600,000 students under age 13.

Disney and OpenAI Reach Licensing Agreement for Sora

Disney has agreed to license more than 200 characters, costumes, and environments (but not voices or talent likenesses) to OpenAI for Sora, its gen AI video platform. This is highly unusual for Disney, which generally sues AI models for copyright infringement; in fact, it sued Google for that a day before announcing the OpenAI deal. Disney will also invest $1 billion in OpenAI, nicely illustrating how very eager they are to join the AI party.
