Generative AI Systems Continue to Return Misinformation: NewsGuard Research

The companies building generative AI tools are treading a narrow bridge between describing the risks of their technology and avoiding government regulations that would hurt their business.  The path got a little harder this week when news quality rating organization NewsGuard reported that Open AI’s ChatGPT-4 and Google Bard are generating as many false narratives today as they were when NewsGuard checked in March and April.

California Removes Most Limits on Robotaxis in San Francisco

In a clear win for the AI industry, the California Public Utilities Commission granted Waymo and Cruise permission to charge for self-driving taxis in San Francisco with virtually no restrictions.  Previous conditions had largely required paid rides to have a safety driver present, although empty and unpaid driverless vehicles have become common in the city.  Local residents are not universally pleased.

CEOs More Enthused About AI Than Their Staff: IBM Report

The clueless boss is a favorite meme in many circles, though probably not among bosses. This IBM survey offers some support, finding that 69% of CEOs believe generative AI will offer broad benefits to their organization but just 29% of their supporting executives feel their company has the expertise to make it work. Two-thirds of CEOs are acting without a clear view of how to help their workforce adjust the AI-created disruptions.

MercadoLibre Reaches the Figure of Five Million Customers in Its Insurance Sector

The leading e-commerce corporation in Latin America, MercadoLibre, has reached 5 million customers in its insurance branch, and it did so in less than four years thanks to solid investments in technology to position itself in the insurtech sector. While Latin American countries are currently significantly below their competitors in North America, Europe, and Asia regarding their gross insurance premiums, the region is expected to experience more growth in insurance premiums between 2022 and 2023 than other geographical areas, except for China.

Albo, the neobank in Mexico, has confirmed the purchase of the fintech company delt.ai, specializing in financial services for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), for $20 million. With this strategic acquisition, albo strengthened its position in the Mexican financial sector, becoming the only neobank to offer debit and credit products for consumers and SMEs. Delt.ai, a firm with experience in Mexico, has conducted over 130,000 transactions, granting over USD $90 million in loans and credit lines.

Egyptian pharma startup Grinta acquires counterpart Auto-Cure to expand footprint

Cairo-based startup Grinta, a fintech-enabled B2B tech platform digitising the pharmaceutical supply chain, has acquired Alexandria-based online pharmacy Auto-Cure to expand its footprint in the country. Founded in 2021 by Mohamed Azab, Yosra Badr, Ali Youssef, and Hamza Mohamed, Grinta is a managed marketplace that modernises the pharmaceutical supply chain by empowering independent pharmacies.
