Vodacom Tanzania hit with $4M suit over ChatGPT data use

The Sh10 billion (US$4M) lawsuit was brought by a Tanzanian businessman who wants compensation for his loss of privacy, which included personal details on calls, SIM information and location data. Vodacom has refuted the accusations.

The US International Trade Commission has a new website to help US companies with transferring data from Europe and the European Economic Area, the UK, Gibraltar and Switzerland. This follows the agreement on the Data Privacy Framework principles for commerce, which have just come into effect, though personal data may not be received until individual dates of adequacy are recognized. However, companies can begin to self-certify their compliance on the site.

A district judge has ruled that, as a matter of law, Ross Intelligence’s use of Thompson Reuters’ Westlaw content to train its own legal research model is not “fair use” but copyright infringement. This is a revision of a 2023 ruling and leaves issues for a jury to decide. It might, however, shut down one line of defense when it comes to AI scraping of copyright material.
