Senegal-based startup Kwely has launched the minimum viable product (MVP) version of its B2B online store for “Made in Africa” products, targeting small and large businesses globally.

Singapore-based data center firm Digital Edge is reportedly close to acquiring a plot of land outside Mumbai, India, on which to develop its first facility in the country. The India Economic Times reports the company is in “advanced talks” in advanced talks to acquire a 47-acre land parcel in Thane, Maharashtra, along with realty developer Assetz Property Group from steel manufacturer Mukand.

India-headquartered travel tech firm RateGain Travel Technologies is acquiring Adara, a Silicon Valley-based firm in travel martech and predictive consumer intelligence. The cost: a mere $16.1 million, according to RateGain’s filing on the Indian stock market. Through the acquisition RateGain is looking to build the most comprehensive travel-intent and data platform powered by artificial intelligence.

Let’s continue looking at story lines for 2023. We’ll start with digital transformation. This CMO Council report paints a mixed picture: 89% of respondents think digital transformation is achieving good results but less than 12% see their enterprise leaders as highly strategic and adept at deploying new technologies.

Another continuing story is marketers’ quest for better media measurement, in particular for connected TV and other video channels. Along those lines, smart TV audience measurement vendor VideoAmp has just announced a deal to measure cross-screen campaign results for Warner Brothers Discovery.

Let’s look at some of the story lines we expect to track this year. One will be increasingly successful attacks on the once-invincible Tech Lords at Google, Meta, and Amazon. This ProPublic report offers new ammunition, finding that Google Display Network is exceptionally lax in blocking placements on sites that host fraud, porn, disinformation, and other bad things.

Another unfolding drama is the struggle for success by social commerce – that is, buying through social media platforms rather than traditional ecommerce sites. Marketers are excited but consumers are skeptical. This GoodFirms report takes an optimistic view but still finds that 89% of social commerce buyers had a problem of some sort.

The tech world will see a continued shift towards self-service by business users, both in data access and application development. It’s a rare convergence of interest between business users, who want more control over their fate, and IT staff, who want to focus on other things. This Forrester report for Airtable highlights the problems, finding that large organizations use an average of 367 software apps and systems, and knowledge workers spend 30% of their time looking for data.

In one of the highest privacy suit settlements anywhere, Meta has agreed to settle the famed Cambridge Analytica suit which in 2018 revealed Facebook was allowing third parties to access user data – and the Cambridge Analytica consulting firm had helped itself to up to 87 million user records. Now, Meta, in agreeing to $725 million to settle the class action, will have the dubious honor of being #1 for a US privacy payout – and one of the top (see below) globally for GDPR.

France’s Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertes (CNIL) found Microsoft Ireland in violation of its privacy laws because the Bing search engine deployed ad cookies on user browsers without consent. The €60 million fine was based on ad profits Microsoft was determined to have generated from the data collection.

On January 1, California added niche privacy protections for groups identified as needing special protections. These include: 1) The Student Test Taker Privacy Act which prohibits collecting and using student information unless it can be proven strictly necessary; 2) Assembly Bill 2089 which specifies information collected by mental health apps must be used only if necessary for health care; and 3) Senate Bill 1228 to protect sexual assault victims from having their DNA information available, except when there is an active police investigation.
