Privacy an ongoing challenge and priority for advertisers

Nearly 90% of respondents from ad agencies and publishers surveyed by Proximic by Comscore for its “State of Privacy in Advertising Report,” reported privacy legislation had a moderate to significant impact on their ability to deliver personalized ads. Audience targeting and measurement capabilities are also big concerns. Advertisers are trying a range of tactics, including use of AI, to stay competitive.

Children’s Privacy: Talkspace’s therapy platform for NYC teens may violate privacy laws

Teenspace, a free online therapy platform and the product of a $26 million partnership between New York City’s Health Department and teletherapy company Talkspace, may violate state and federal privacy laws, say privacy advocates. More than 16,000 students have signed up for the platform since last year.  Concerns are that information is being improperly collected and is at risk of data breaches.

In Brief: Cars again!

Those seemingly-innocent driveway dwellers keep craftily sharing data – in fact, even in real time via V2X (a.k.a vehicle-to-everything), which is when your and my data is transmitted to other cars and via sensors along the road – think digital tolls. Now the US Department of Transportation is recommending ways state and local governments can deploy V2X for public safety, but critics believe the data collected, while not giving a specific ID, would share enough that identities would be apparent.

Salesforce Offers AI Agents to Replace “Outdated” Copilots and Chatbots

Here’s a new buzzword for your Bingo card: “agentic AI”, which describes systems that act by themselves rather than in response to a prompt.  Salesforce was all over the concept last week, announcing its Agentforce collection.  According to the company, it replaces the “now-outdated copilots and chatbots” with agents “operating autonomously, retrieving the right data on demand, building action plans for any task, and executing these plans without requiring human intervention.”

Latest OpenAI Models Capable of “Scheming”

Does all this talk about autonomous AI agents make you just a tiny bit nervous?  With good reason, it seems: OpenAI’s latest o1-preview model “has the basic capabilities needed to do simple in-context scheming,” according to a scorecard prepared for OpenAI by Apollo Research.  Echoing any number of science fiction nightmares, OpenAI reports that new model’s “reasoning skills contributed to a higher occurrence of ‘reward hacking,’” which means pursuing goals in an unintended—and undesirable — way.

Oracle Unity CDP Adds AI-Powered Analytics

Oracle Unity CDP also has new AI-based features, including best offer recommendations, buying group and opportunity scoring, native Analytics Cloud integration, and industry-specific onboarding accelerators.  No mention of agents, although they’re probably lurking in the background.  To be clear: while Oracle abandoned its advertising business recently, its Oracle Customer Experience suite, which includes the Unity CDP, is going strong.

Consumers Eager for Personalized Content: Marigold

It’s all surveys today, Dear Reader.  Marigold reports that consumers are eager for personalized content, with 79% saying they’re likely to engage with a personalized email tailored to their interests.  Sadly, 33% feel their needs are unmet by current brand messages.  Discounts and coupons (95%) top the list of what they want in exchange for personal data, followed closely by loyalty rewards at 94%.  Content is last at 61%.
