Legality and safety of data flows to Russia is raising questions in the EU

A statement issued by the EU Data Protection Board about data transfers between EU countries and Russia is raising concern among privacy experts who feel extra care must be taken considering the Ukraine war and because the EU doesn’t have an adequacy agreement with Russia. US FTC puts companies on notice about data sharing, date misuse, and false claims

The US Federal Trade Commission has emphasized its commitment to enforcing privacy protections following the Dobbs ruling, by reminding companies that privacy is protected under other laws, including the Safeguards Rule, the Health Breach Notification Rule, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule, and under state laws. Indonesia is threatening to block tech company platforms, including Google, Twitter and Meta’s, that still have not complied with the country’s licensing rules by this week’s deadline. The licensing rules allow Indonesian authorities to demand that content they deem unlawful or disturbing to the public be taken down. It also compels companies to turn over communication and personal data of individuals upon request from law enforcement or the government.

Attitudes evolving on how positive consumers feel about sharing data with brands

A new survey from privacy platform Ketch found 74% of US consumers place high value on their privacy, but an even higher percentage – 83% – said they understand there’s good value in sharing with brands. The 2,750 people surveyed also reported the positive impact on their relationships with companies that respect their privacy preferences, and a notable 23% reported an increase in purchase intent when they perceived positive data practices.

Children’s Privacy: A majority of parents want government and business help to ensure privacy for kids

A survey of nearly 1,000 parents of kids up to age 17 found they don’t feel enough is being done to help protect their kids’ privacy. Trusted Future found 91% of the parents wanted reviews by experts before apps are made available to download, and 74% wanted mobile device makers to build in security that protects family data. Parents also wanted more federal and state protections, and they identified these six areas that would increase their level of trust.

Two-Thirds of Marketers Don’t Trust Their Data: CMO Council

What separates top performers from everyone else is always an interesting question to ask, although it’s often not clear whether the answers reflect causes or effects.  This CMO Council report finds marketers making the best use of data have more adaptable systems, make more use of AI, and can access more data more quickly.  Just over one-third of all respondents (38%) have high confidence in their data systems.

Automation Is Key to Data Quality Success: TWDI Report

IT staff often feel better about their data than business users.  Sure enough, this TWDI survey of IT professionals found nearly half (46%) say they rarely have data quality problems, and only 24% say problems occur often.  The report finds that successful data quality programs are much more likely to use AI-based tools than unsuccessful programs (70% vs 19%).  It also offers a nice data quality maturity model, if you’re into self-assessment or want to torture someone who isn’t.

Companies with Better CX Had Better Pandemic Results: XM Institute

One causal relationship that’s pretty clear is better customer experience leads to better financial performance – at least where monopolies are not involved.  This report from Qualtrics’ XM Institute proves the point yet again, showing that companies with a high CX rating at the start of the pandemic substantially outperformed their peers during 2020.  The authors argue that companies with better CX were more agile, which let them adapt more effectively to pandemic challenges.
