Children’s Privacy: Common Sense Media finds most popular kid tech companies falling short on privacy safeguards

Common Sense Media’s 2021 State of Kids’ privacy report shows privacy protection provided by companies is far below parental expectations and doesn’t meet Common Sense’s minimum privacy threshold. The organization evaluated 200 of the most popular kids tech and edtech applications and services over 5-years and, while overall median scores increased year-over-year by 20%, 74% did not meet Common Sense’s minimum privacy recommendations.

Unanimous UK Supreme Court ruling provides big Google win and blocks Safari-tracking consumer class action

A longtime, widely-watched suit that claimed Google used a Safari workaround to override iPhone users’ privacy settings, has been decided on appeal in Google’s favor. The suit tried to establish that representative action could be brought in the UK for data protection violation and loss of control for an estimated 4 million users.  But the court determined specific damage/loss must be suffered to claim compensation.

US strengthens financial data security requirements under Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published changes to the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, which protects consumer financial privacy at financial institutions and at companies handling financial activities. Key changes under the revised Safeguards Rule include: expanded definition of types of companies subject to GLBA more specific, detailed requirements for compliance oversight obligation to appoint a security officer to oversee and implement a security program

Children’s Privacy: India’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) found a 400%+ one-year rise in cybercrime cases committed against kids

Comparing 2020 to 2019, NCRB’s reported a sharp rise in publishing of materials depicting children in sexually explicit acts. Though overall volume is small, this plus UNICEF’s 2020 report on youth internet use – – which said that 37.6 million children in India accessed remote learning during the pandemic – reinforces concern that increased loneliness and limited opportunities for socialization make children more vulnerable online.
