The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) 2024 US State Privacy Legislation Tracker provides an overview of state-level legislation for the sixteen states that passed privacy bills and shows the more than a dozen bills currently proposed.

Data subject requests (DSRs) in the form of customer requests for companies to provide access to, delete, and stop selling and sharing data have increased exponentially in the past several years. So have business costs to comply. DataGrail’s 2024 Data Privacy Trends report shows a 246% increase in requests from 2021 to 2023 and indicates that for every 1 million customer identities, manual processing of DSRs costs ~$800 thousand.

The Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) of the US Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a compliance warning on using AI in ads and when collecting data on children. They highlighted key areas of concern, including AI-generated deep-fakes, product descriptions that use enhanced AI, and use of avatars and simulated influencers that can mislead children.

Tealium has launched a suite of solutions aimed at powering AI models with rich, filtered and consented data. Tealium for AI uses existing Tealium features to support AI applications with specialized integrations, partnerships, configurations, and attributes.

Screenverse’s mission is to bring programmatic to the digital out-of-home market where, just as with traditional billboards, much inventory is still sold directly. Although $2.9 billion was spent on DOOH in 2023, only about half a billion was programmatic. A Series A round of $10.5 million will help Screenverse in its mission.

Newsletter creation and distribution platform Beehiiv has raised $33 million in its Series B funding round. Unusually, the platform does not take a portion of newsletter subscription revenue but offers paid plans for newsletters with more than 2,500 subscribers. It also allows newsletter owners to monetize via the Beehiiv ad network.

Customer intelligence platform Acxiom will collaborate with ActionIQ to deliver enhanced customer insights. ActionIQ’s CDP will integrate with Acxiom’s demographic, household, behavioral and preference data and with Acxiom’s RealID identity resolution solution. Acxiom experts will work with clients to customize and streamline ActionIQ.

Merkle advances its stake in customer experience management by partnering with data platform Celebrus to launch CXM Signals. The solution will use Celebrus’ data capture methodology to develop improved, first-party data-based customer profiles and therefore audience segments. The aim is to promote better experience management to support existing relationships and boost loyalty.

In-game advertising continues to grow. Roblox has made its self-serve Ad Manager available to all customers. Ads can be sorted by genre targeting, brand suitability and audience estimator. This comes days after Walmart’s announcement that it will allow users to browse and purchase physical goods within Roblox’s virtual spaces.

T-Mobile will allow advertisers to target more than 20,000 screens in 11,000 store locations. That’s a lot of screens, but how much foot traffic does the average T-Mobile store get? It’s also linking up with streaming media company Plex as a CTV partner.

Eight newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News have brought a lawsuit against OpenAI for allegedly taking “millions” of articles without permission or payment to train their large language models. The plaintiffs are asking for damages and also the destruction of LLMs trained on their work. So much for yesterday’s Financial Times news suggesting publishers and OpenAI could get along.

Only 10% of respondents to a Pew Research survey of over 10,000 U.S. adults viewed social media’s impact on America positively; 64% took the negative view. A whopping 78% say the platforms have too much influence on politics. More than half believe that major tech companies should face more government regulation.
