Tiger Global, YC back Rebill’s subscription payment platform for Latin America

Rebill, an Argentina-based startup, raised $3.6 million to continue building automated payment collection and subscription management tools for Latin America. The company automates the collection process and integrates payment gateways and invoicing tools so that customers don’t have to create their own. Currently, Rebill has clients in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay and collects payments in 15 currencies.

Medallia Closes Purchase of Callback Scheduling Vendor Mindful

The simplest description of Medallia is “listening platform”, but that sounds creepier than what they actually do, which is to analyze and react to customer and employee conversations.  They were bought by software investor Thoma Bravo last October and have made at least four acquisitions since then, including the Thunderhead journey orchestration engine.  They just closed their deal for callback scheduling vendor Mindful, which was announced in July.

DrivenIQ Raises $15 Million Series A to Fill Voids in CDP Market

DrivenIQ helps car dealers pull together data about customers and prospects, with a broad range of features including web traffic analytics, website visitor identification, geo-zoning, identity resolution, and 14 billion customer records related to more than 230 million U.S. households.  They promise to “fill significant voids in the Customer Data Platform Market” although it’s not clear what voids they have in mind.  What is clear is they just raised a $15 million Series A.

Retail Media Revenue to Top $40 Billion in 2022: eMarketer Report

You may not want another item about retail media but look on the bright side, Dear Reader: it’s not about social commerce.  Anyway, this overview by eMarketer is pretty good, including the headline estimates that retail media ad revenue will grow 31.4% this year, total $40.8 billion and account for 16.4% of U.S. digital ad spending.  But don’t get too frisky: Amazon accounts for 77% of the total.

Employees Suffer More than Customers from Poor Identity Management: Radian Logic Study

You can download this Radiant Logic study on identity management without sharing your email address, which may be the authors’ sly comment on the value of some customer information. Sure enough, the IT leaders who answered the survey were much more likely to worry about the impact of “identity sprawl” on employee frustration (46%) than on customer service (12%). They have a point: 60% said their company has more than 21 different identities per internal user, leading to all sorts of inefficiencies and security risks.

Major retailers face Illinois biometric class action

A federal lawsuit filed in Illinois renews claims major retailers have been matching in-store surveillance camera images with biometric facial data scraped off the Internet by Clearview AI, presumably for the purpose of detecting shoplifters. The allegations claim victims’ images captured and able to be identified were in violation of Illinois’ BIPA privacy law. This new case has been filed because an attempt to tie it to a prior Macy’s case was disallowed for timing.

LexisNexis accused of violating law protecting immigrant data

Data broker LexisNexis is accused in a Chicago-area lawsuit of selling personal information on immigrants to federal law enforcement and other third-party buyers without consent. Data included correctional bookings and vehicle collision and license plate data. Immigration advocacy groups involved pointed to a $22 million contract that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has for a LexisNexis product that enables instant access to personal data without warrants or subpoenas.

CBDCs (aka Central Bank Digital Currencies) in your wallet may become the biggest threat to your privacy. Reason is, once financial transactions go digital, our activities can be fully tracked, A new Israeli law that’s about to cap cash transaction size in that country is the newest example of the push to use digital currencies worldwide. To date, more than 90 countries are exploring and expanding use of CBDCs. A newly issued report from Europe’s Central Bank explains the implications and looks at how CBDCs will impact business and privacy. Key Question: Can market forces and resounding demand from consumers for financial privacy ensure a desirable level of CBDC privacy? Absolutely not, this report notes, which is why we need to understand what this is about.
